Set of four silver medals House of Vartenberk proof
The House of Vartenberk was a Bohemian noble family originating from a large House of Markvartic. Its coat of arms featured a gold-and-black split shield entwined with a green dragon. The cradle of the Vartenberks was located in the central Jizera region. In the 14th and 15th century, the Vartenberk lords ranked among the most powerful noblemen in the Kingdom of Bohemia and owned a great number of Czech castles and chateaus.
One of the founders of the House of Vartenberk was Markvart of Březno, who built the castle Stráž, also known as Vartenberk, near Mimoň. His son, Beneš of Vartenberk “Pincerna”, fathered four sons who produced four main family branches – Veselí, Kumburk, Kost and Děčín. Beneš held the post of the king’s chief butler and chamberlain. Čeněk of Vartenberk contributed to the greatest expansion of the house; he was a Hussite leader, but later converted to Catholicism. The last Vartenberk was Jan Jiří, who participated in the Estates uprising and after the defeat at the White Mountain his property was confiscated. He died in exile in 1647, leaving the family extinct.
The obverse sides feature idealised portraits of the prominent representatives of the House of Vartenberk. The common reverse side depicts the Vartenberk coat of arms.
Limited edition of 800 pieces.
