Gold coin 5000 CZK Veveří stand

Veveří is one of the oldest and largest castle areas - not only in Moravia, but in the whole Czech Republic. Therefore, the Czech National Bank issued another gold coin with a nominal value of 10,000 CZK in quality standard.

The first written mention of Veveří dates back to 1213. Firstly it served as a small hunting lodge and a court of Moravian margraves, but gradually became a real stone castle where the king supervised the settlement of the Svratka river basin from. Veveří also served as a prison for the opponents of Ottokar II. The Luxembourg dynasty played a key role in the history of the castle. The Moravian Margrave Charles, the future Czech king and Roman Emperor Charles IV used the castle only exceptionally, but his younger brother Margrave John Henry of Luxembourg made it an important country seat that attracted the conquest troops of the Hussites, the Swedes and the Prussians in the following centuries...

The design of the medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS was awarded the first prize in the Czech National Bank competition. The expert committee appreciated "original and unusual depiction of the castle core from the ceiling" on the reverse side and "an interesting design of the obverse side which is dominated by a view of the castle courtyard through a door portal, together with the heraldic animals".
